A group of animals were waiting for me to finish my play. They want to help me preform it. I am almost finished, but can't decide how to do the final part. I have written two equally good parts. The animals grow tired of waiting and leave to go to James Caan's party. Frustrated I walk around ISU.
...I am enrolled in Illinois State University...
I think about the play as I wander the campus. Maybe all monologues. Maybe more action. I don't know. I realize I am near my dorms, so I go to my room.
...Momence High School was converted into the dormitories...
My roommate is there with his friends: Ross, Chandler, and Joey from the Friends television show. I ask if I can hang out with them. They say yes. I sit on the couch when they leave to get some beer.
Enrique, the foreign exchange student, turns to me ands asks, "Are you safe?"
"I am safe."
We sit on the couch a while. Bored I decide to leave.
"Enrique, you want to come with me while I get my mail?"
"Yes."
We leave the dorm room and head to the mailboxes.
...The mailboxes were flattened cardboard boxes on the front lawn...
Almost everyone else is at their mailbox. Odd. Then I see everyone has received the same blue form letter.
...The letter was from the city of Chicago. They were informing everyone for their benefit the dormitories were being shut down to allow the students a chance to explore new options. Everyone knew that the city was really evicting everyone to save money...
Everyone is pissed so I decide waiting in the dorm room may be better. Enrique and I walk back upstairs.
"Damn. I locked my keys in the room. We have to go see the RA."
We head downstairs and stand in line. Eventually my turn comes. I tell the middle-age heavy-set black woman behind the counter locked my keys in my room.
"Which room," she asks.
"532"
I wait and wait. She finally returns with my keys. I go back to my room. What the hell. The door is unlocked. My roommate and his friends have returned. They are sitting on the couch drinking beer. Seeing them reminds me I still have not done anything. I still have not decided anything. Frustrated I run from the room. I run from the dormitory to nearby Momence Junior High. I have two sweatshirts but I can not decide what to do with them. One is black, the other red. I resolve to place one sweatshirt in each hand. Now I can run full speed. Only I can not. I am pushing as hard as I can but I am barely moving. I feel like I am running through water. Other students run past me. They are moving at fast speed. Why can't I move fast too.
"When my dreams are like running in water, I must use my will power to push myself. When my body is slow I must use my brain to make myself fast."
I will myself to be faster. Through intense concentration I am able to move faster.
